Avengers: Endgame Cast (2019)

Marvel Studios | Superhero / Action | 181 min | Directed by Anthony & Joe Russo

Avengers: Endgame (2019) is the culmination of twenty-two interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Following Thanos's catastrophic use of the Infinity Gauntlet in Infinity War, the surviving Avengers devise a desperate plan to travel through time and reclaim the Infinity Stones. The film serves as both a spectacular action spectacle and an emotional farewell to characters who defined an era of blockbuster filmmaking. With a runtime of three hours and one minute, it broke multiple box-office records and became the second-highest-grossing film in history.

The Avengers: Endgame cast represents the single largest ensemble ever assembled in a superhero film. More than forty named characters appear across the film's runtime, with virtually every major hero introduced in the MCU's first three phases showing up for the climactic final battle. At the center of the story are Robert Downey Jr. reprising Tony Stark for the eleventh time, Chris Evans in his final turn as Steve Rogers, and Scarlett Johansson delivering an especially poignant performance as Natasha Romanoff. Supporting them is a deep bench that includes Josh Brolin's menacing Thanos, Karen Gillan's reinvented Nebula, and Paul Rudd's Scott Lang, whose role as the architect of the time-heist plan proved to be one of the film's most important. The Russo brothers drew on every previous MCU film to craft a story that rewarded long-time viewers while still working as a standalone adventure.

About the Avengers: Endgame Cast

Assembling the Avengers: Endgame cast required coordinating the schedules of dozens of actors across multiple Marvel productions, many of whom were simultaneously filming other projects. The Russo brothers and Marvel Studios shot large portions of Endgame and Infinity War back-to-back beginning in January 2017, a production that lasted over a year. Robert Downey Jr. had already portrayed Tony Stark in ten previous MCU films by the time Endgame began shooting, and the entire production kept the film's plot under extraordinary secrecy β€” many actors received only the pages relevant to their own scenes. Chris Evans publicly announced his retirement from the role of Captain America following the film, making his scenes carrying special weight for long-time fans of the character.

Several cast members faced emotional challenges during production. Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow had been a constant presence since Iron Man 2 (2010), and the character's sacrifice on Vormir marked one of the film's most affecting moments. Karen Gillan shaved her head to play Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy and wore a prosthetic for that role; her expanded, morally complex arc in Endgame became a highlight for critics. Josh Brolin, performing the title villain via motion capture, described the shoot as one of the most physically and emotionally demanding of his career. The final battle sequence β€” featuring the full assembled cast β€” was filmed on an enormous purpose-built set and took weeks of additional shooting to complete.
